Burnout is a state of physical or emotional exhaustion that can negatively affect a person’s perception of his own achievements and render his productivity low.
Although burnout is not a technically medical condition, some research indicates that it is ingrained and might be correlated to mental health diseases that can be passed on genetically, like depression and anxiety. Research has shown that people with a family history of depression or anxiety are more likely to suffer burnout under stressful work conditions. A person’s upbringing and personality also play a role in how he reacts to the stress of the workplace and how much he can endure such stressful conditions.
Nevertheless, burnout can affect anyone.
Due to its negative effects on a person’s life, which include but are not limited to:
- Excessive stress
- Fatigue
- Insomnia
- Sadness, anger or irritability
- Alcohol or substance misuse
- Heart disease
- High blood pressure
- Type 2 diabetes
- Vulnerability to illnesses
it is imperative to identify the signs of burnout at an early stage, and counteract them.
The symptoms of fatigue can vary between people, but in general, you can identify the signs by checking whether:
- You have become extra critical or cynical at work
- You feel like you have lost the passion for what you do
- You become irritable and highly reactive with bosses and coworkers
- You feel like your energy and productivity levels have been severely drained
- You have trouble concentrating
- You lack satisfaction from your achievements
- Your sleep habits have changed
- You are experienced unexplainable aches in your body
If you suffer from those signs, there are several ways you can do to remedy your stress. This could include discussing more considerate work conditions with your superiors, or rethinking the way you manage your time. It could also include taking care of your mental wellbeing through practicing selfcare and mindfulness. Seeking support is one of the most important things you can do to help yourself.
